2023 CALI RALLY SUPPLEMENTAL RULES

The below is intended to serve as supplemental rules to govern the DP4 Racing event known as the “Cali Rally” to take place on November 3, 4, 5 2023 in Johnson Valley and Barstow, Ca. The event is round number five of the 2023 Method Race Wheels DP4 Racing Championship presented by Tensor Tires, and will pay triple class points for all classes towards the season championship.

Any and all rules listed in the official 2023 DP4 Racing Rulebook will be enforced at the Cali Rally, and this supplemental rule book is used to further clarify the rules of the event.

Event Location and Operations

The Home Base for the Cali Rally will be in Johnson Valley at Anderson Dry Lake with Sign Ups, GPS Tracker Assignment, all daily driver’s meetings, and tech inspection at the sign ups tent/podium trailer.

The 2023 Cali Rally will have one main pit, and one auxiliary pit. The main pit will be in Johnson Valley at Anderson Dry Like off of Camp Rock Road and will open for camping Thursday November 2nd, 2023. There is no charge for camping and/or spectating, but we ask that the parking along the pit row (yellow flags) is left open for racers only. Team support vehicles shall park behind the race vehicles as to allow for maximum race vehicle parking.

The Barstow auxiliary pit will be used for Saturday’s racing ONLY and will be located on Stoddard Wells Rd, near Slash X. Racers are expected to have a traveling pit crew who can assist with fueling and other necessary activities at the alternative pit for Saturday’s event. *Note that although race teams are welcome to camp at the auxiliary pit, there will be no DP4 services at the auxiliary pit outside of racing events taking place on Saturday November 4th.

SXS entered into tech inspection must be the same vehicle that starts the race each day. If you change vehicles you will be subjected to disqualification. No Driver of Record may be registered as the Driver of Record in more than one SXS.

Scoring and Race Format

The 2023 Cali Rally will consist of three days of racing, with a different marked/GPS course each day. This event will have one class winner at the end of the event, and each day’s racing shall not be considered as “separate races.” Points will be cumulative based off of the racers finish from each day, and the racer with the best daily finishes in their class over the three days will be considered the winner.

Each day’s racing will be approximately 100 miles. GPS mapping will be available for download the evening prior to each race. Racing trackers are required for all SXS entered in the Cali Rally. Race trackers are required to be hard wired directly to the SXS battery without a switch. For tracking information, rental status and hardware, please visit www.racingtrax.com.

Racing will start each day, according to the Cali Rally Schedule with riders leaving one at a time in 20 second intervals. Racers will complete 4 laps each, but will be scored for a day’s finish after completing at least one lap per day. Riders do NOT have to finish all three days to be considered a finisher in the Cali Rally, however, racers who complete 3 days of racing will be scored ahead of racers who complete 2 days of racing in each class, and racers who complete 2 days of racing will be scored ahead of racers who complete 1 day of racing. For further event scoring details, see page 8 of the 2023 DP4 Racing Rulebook.

The 2023 Cali Rally will use Racing Trax to monitor racers while on the race course. Monitoring will be used for locating racers on the race course, proving live coverage for friends/family of your position on the race course, and for the purpose of monitoring speeds and assessing penalties. In addition to the previously mentioned items, the Racing Trax system will include multiple virtual check points along each day’s race courses. During each race all racers must past through each VCP (virtual check points).  Failure to pass through all checkpoints, along the course will subject that entry to penalties of up to and including disqualification at the discretion of the Race Referee.  If an NVCP (negative virtual check point) is triggered (racing off course), the NVCP will subject that entry to penalties of up to and including disqualification at the discretion of the Race Referee.

Racing Day 1

Racing will start on Friday November 3rd (day 1) at 11 am and will be concluded when racers finish their 4th lap, or when the pits close. Upon finishing, racers are welcome to return to their pits and prep their car for the next day’s event. There is no impound at this event, nor is there a limit to what can be rebuilt on the race car, as long as it is the same car that starts all three days.

Racing Day 2

Racers will line up on Saturday November 4th (day 2) at 8:30am and start their transfer section from Johnson Valley to Barstow at 9am with one car leaving every 20 seconds. This transfer section will be speed controlled and monitored by the GPS units. Note that a penalty will be assessed for speeding in the transfer section, and will be applied by the race officials with penalties applied up to and including disqualification at the discretion of the race referee. All SXS are required to complete the transfer section from Johnson Valley to Barstow under their own power. Posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour, and this will be marked on the GPS as well. The transfer section is approx. 24.5 miles, and should take approx. 1 hour to complete. Upon completing the transfer, racers will line up for the start in Barstow and racing will commence at 10:20 with the first car leaving the line and subsequent cars following every 20 seconds. The day’s racing will be concluded when racers finish their 4th lap, or when the pits close.

Upon completing the racing for day two, finishers will congregate near he finish until the transfer section back to Johnson Valley opens up. *Note that this time will be posted at the riders meeting prior to day two of racing, but will be approximately one hour after the leader finishes the race. Racers are encouraged to give their car a once over once prior to taking to the transfer section to return home.

Should a SXS be damaged and unable to be driven under its own power to complete the transfer section back to Johnson Valley, the driver of record may request (before transporting and by contacting scoring) to transport the SXS back to the main pits via trailer on the highway, but the driver of record will receive a 60-minute penalty to be applied to their finish time on day 2.

Racing Day 3

Racing will start on Sunday November 5th (day 3) at 10 am and will be concluded when racers finish their 4th lap, or when the pits close. Upon finishing, racers are encouraged to congregate near the finishline and congratulate all 3-day Cali Rally finishers. The award ceremony will take place once all racers have finished the Cali Rally, and awards will be given for finishers of the Cali Rally and year-end championships.

Starting Order    The starting order for each day will be determined by the following:

Day 1 (Friday November 3rd) – Starting order will be determined by random draw (by class) at the “Those Side by Side Guys” Live draw which will take place at the Thursday evening riders meeting.

Day 2 (Saturday November 4th) – Starting order will be determined by the race 1 finish positions within each class with the class winner from day 1 starting FIRST in their class.
